The Singapore Management University (SMU) was officially established in January 12th, 2000 and is uniquely the first private university in Singapore to be funded by the government. The university prizes on its unique curriculum, which is modeled after the highly successful Wharton School. Home to 3000+ students, SMU comprises of four schools: the Lee Kong Chian School of Business; the School of Accountancy; the School of Economics & Social Sciences; and the School of Information Systems. The university has made strategic collaborations with both the world renowned Wharton School of Business of University of Pennsylvania and with the IT-renowned Carnegie Mellon University. Location
In August 2005, Singapore Management University’s (SMU) city campus will be located in the heart of Singapore City in the historic Bras Basah district. Located in the center of the civil district, the campus is surrounded by museums, restaurants, galleries, theatres, cafes and various shopping districts. SMU’s new campus environment merges the vibrancy of student life with the business, arts and cultural community in the area.

Academic Information
As mentioned previously, SMU’s curriculum is modeled after Wharton school of business of U-Penn. The SMU’s curriculum is committed to provide an interactive and participative, technologically able learning experience. SMU’s preferred teaching methods are seminars with approximately 40 students per class. SMU strives to keep classes small to stimulate interaction and critical thinking amongst students. The faculty members come from all corners of the globe to provide international perspectives. Most courses offered under SMU’s degree programs are available to exchange students, subject to vacancy. Exchange students should also note that certain elective courses have pre-requisites for enrolment. Students are encouraged to take a wide selection of courses to expand scope and knowledge. Exchange students are allowed to drop a course within the first two weeks of the term without penalty.
Credit Equivalency
5 SMU credits = 15 SSB credits
Each course is worth 1 credit with 39 hours of instruction.
Language
All courses at SMU are taught in English.
Facilities
The SMU campus has a number of gymnasiums for various recreational and sports activities. In the new campus, the Li Ka Sing library is set to become the leading business resource center in Asia. The library operates from 8am to 8pm, however, there will be 24 hour reading rooms. The new city campus will also have campus-wide wireless Internet network that will ensure connectivity across campus. Throughout the campus, there are also computer, business communication, and language labs.

Information regarding accommodation at the new campus will be provided by the host university.
Health Insurance
It is mandatory for students to have health insurance that provides essential medical coverage for - outpatient consultation, treatment, medication and hospitalization in any government restructured hospital within Singapore. Exchange students must purchase the Student Medical and Hospitalization & Surgical Benefits (HNS) for International Students and Exchange Students at SMU.
