The Business College (Handelshochschule), founded by the city of Mannheim in 1907, can be considered the true predecessor of the existing university. The re-opening of the college after the second world war, renamed the "Staatliche Wirtschaftshochschule," marked the beginning of a gradual broadening of the curriculum which culminated in the renaming of the college to "Universität Mannheim" in 1967.
With approximately 12,000 students, the University of Mannheim belongs to Germany's medium-large sized universities. The university also maintains contact with over 450 scientific institutions and research facilities throughout the world.
Location
The city of Mannheim owes its existence to the Palace, which today houses the University. The Mannheim Palace is undoubtedly one of the loveliest buildings among German universities. Its vast dimensions (450m long, built on 6 hectars, and containing over 1,500 windows) make it larger than its model, the Palace of Versailles.
Mannheim lies at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar Rivers. With a population of 300,000, it is the second largest city in the Federal State of Baden-Wurttemberg. Not only is Mannheim the geographical centre, but also the intellectual, cultural, and economic centre of the densely populated Rhine-Neckar region. Mannhiem is a relatively young city but can nevertheless look back to a colourful history, the legacy of which can still be perceived today. In the 18th century it was an industrial and economic centre. Today, in the 21st, Mannheim has become a cultural and an economic centre. It is the major automotive and electronic centre in Germany.
